Duke Nursing Highlights: Certified Medical Assistant- Duke Primary Care Occ Summar y The Medical Assistant, Certified functions as an integral memb er of theinterdisciplinary healthcare team in providing direct patient c are. TheMedical Assistant, Certified performs routine administrative and patientcare supportive duties in a Health System medical practice that assistmedical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment ofpa tients and ensure the clinic/office runs smoothly. Work Performed Clinical responsibilities:The CMA takes medical histories and records vital signs, explainstreatment procedures to patients, and prepares patients for examinationsand procedures.Patient care support re sponsibilities may include assisting the medicaland nursing staff during examination and procedures, collecting andpreparing laboratory specimen s, performing basic laboratory test in theclinic/office, taking electroc ardiograms, removing sutures/ staples,changing sterile and non-sterile d ressings, promoting patient/familyunderstanding of the educational conte nt and his/her involvement in theplan of care, and documenting in the pa tient record.Other clinical support responsibilities include disposing o fcontaminated supplies, instrument processing, high level disinfectionan d sterilization of medical instruments, telephoning prescriptions to aph armacy, preparing and administering medications as directed by aphysicia n, and authorizing drug refills as directed. Performs otherclinical func tions as delegated and supervised by the physician.Administrative respon sibilities:The CMA greets patients, answers telephones, schedules appoin tments toinclude arrive appointments in MaestroCare, checkout patients, andreferral scheduling; arranges for hospital admissions and laboratorys ervices, updates and files patient medical records, fills out insurancef orms, handles billing, bookkeeping to include receiving copays andcollec tions on account balances; correspondence, and ordering clinicaland cler ical supplies and forms. Performs other administrative duties asdirected .May be requested to be a liaison for clinic activities such as JointCom mission and falls and/or participate in clinic committees. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Good customer service skills.Wor k requires the ability to understand and follow oral and writteninstruct ions generally acquired through a high school education andmedical assis tant programming.Heavy lifting and the ability to transport stretcher and wheelchairpatients may be required.Working knowledge of sterile techni ques and special procedures that areapplicable to work performed.Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administeringroutine and special treatments to patients.Working knowledge of sanitation, per sonal hygiene and basic health andsafety precautions applicable for work in a clinic setting. High school or GED graduation required. Level III -- Graduation from a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) strongly preferred. High school or GED graduation required. Level IV -- Graduation from a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) strongly preferred. High school or GED graduation required. Level I -- No experience required. Level II -- 1 year of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified in a clinical setting. Level IV -- 3 years of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified in a clinical setting. Note: 1 year of experience will be provided for an Associate degree in Medical Assisting. General Ladder Statement: In addition to the education and experience noted, applicants must meet all requirements set forth in the Medical Assistant, Certified (CMA/RMA) LadderProgram document for Levels II, III, and IV.
